Peter Obi, Soludo, others present at Vatican as Bishop Okpaleke becomes Cardinal

Congratulations to Ndi Anambra as Pope Francis swears in Peter Okpaleke as Cardinal. You will recall that Bishop Okpaleke was rejected by Ahiara Diocese because he was not from Imo State. Okpaleke resigned as bishop from the Ahiara diocese in Imo state after being rejected because he was not an indigene. Among the clerics who were today created Cardinals in Rome by Pope Francis is Peter Cardinal Okpaleke of Ekwulobia Diocese, Nigeria. He is now the fifth Nigerian Bishop to ever attain the such position.

The Catholic world leader celebrated the ordination in St. Peters basilica Vatican City in Rome yesterday 27th August 2022, together with 20 other New Cardinals from all around the world among the catholic faithful. The college of cardinals is a body of senior priests who support the pope in overseeing the affairs of the church, and they also vote during papal elections. Though Cardinal Peter Ebere Okpaleke who is the Bishop of Ekwulobia from Nigeria enjoyed the benefit of being ordained as scheduled his counterpart from Ghana couldn't because he fell sick while preparing in Rome. The new cardinals are an addition to the college of cardinals which has now grown from 208 to 229.

Among those who were present to celebrate the ordination with the new Cardinal is former Anambra Governor and Nigerian Labour party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and His Excellency Gov. Chukwuma Charles Soludo of Anambra State and, 300 other Catholic faithful from Nigeria especially, from the South East.
While Congratulating Cardinal Okpaleke, Peter Obi sends his congratulatory message via his tweet referring to the new cardinal as the Prince of the Church. In his post on Twitter, Obi wrote: “I rejoice with His Eminence, Peter Cardinal Okpaleke as he canonically receives the Red Hat from His Holiness, Pope Francis at a Consistory in Rome today, by which function, he has become a fully-fledged  Prince of the Universal Church.

“He has remained a blessing to not just the church in Nigeria, but the universal church. His patience, understanding, and wide perspectives on issues remain some of the valuable assets that have continued to propel him higher in the priestly vocation.”

It is also worthy of note that the swearing of His Eminence Peter Cardinal Okpaleke makes it 2 Cardinals from Anambra state, the first in Africa.

Apart from the new cardinal Peter Okpaleke who was just ordained, other Cardinals from Nigeria previously ordained are Dominic Ekandem (now late), John Onaiyekan, Anthony Okogie, and Francis Arinze.
